A more personalized TV experience is clearly in demand from consumers. Despite the inherent complexity involved in accessing multiple devices, with different and often clumsy interfaces and search facilities, people around the world are creating their own personal TV. APRICO's personal TV solution was designed from the start with this emerging trend in mind. It makes personal TV easy - for consumers and for service providers, device manufacturers, and their technology partners. Consumers get what they want without the hassle and service providers can promote highly targeted content and advertising to an inherently engaged audience.
APRICO's full personal TV experience incorporates all the elements described in the other use case solutions, but adds a layer of sophistication to the presentation and navigation process; the tools to record and download broadcast and on-demand assets, and the means to manage, unify and time-shift user, or group, specific content. A core element of the user centric APRICO personal TV experience is the personal channel - a unified presentation, regardless of the original source, of a user's favorite content with individual items time shifted to suit their preferences. Users of personal TV enabled systems have four primary options for the creation of their own personal channels:
- Selection of a channel template - created by another user, the service provider or an advertising partner (e.g. a motoring channel from a car manufacturer), sourced from other users or based on an existing channel
- Based on a 'seed' program - the user simply asks the system to create a channel based on the program they are currently viewing e.g. creation of a tennis based channel when watching Wimbledon
- Based on a search query - users simply enter a search term that describes the area of interest e.g. DIY
- From a manual definition/specific user input - users can select from variables including program type, genre, actor, director etc.
Content matching becomes increasingly sophisticated as individual video assets in each channel are viewed or rejected. The system takes note of all relevant interactions to build a comprehensive profile of what is required in the channel. Live installations of personal TV have shown that within 17 days, personal TV channels are selected for 90% of all viewing.
